Curbside Service

1. What is Curbside Service?

Curbside Service is available for current Orange Public Library patrons who have a library account in good standing (fees at $10.00 or under, unexpired accounts, etc.). Patrons will be able to pick up items they have placed on hold without having to enter the Library. Please note that eCards and Comp Use Only card holders cannot use Curbside Service.

2. When and where is Curbside Service available?

Beginning Wednesday, May 13th, Curbside Service will be available Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. at the Orange Public Library & History Center located at 407 E. Chapman Ave. Our Taft and El Modena Branch Libraries will not be participating in curbside services at this time and remain closed to the public.

3. How does Curbside Service work?

Current Orange Public Library cardholders will be able to place items on hold and pick them up at our Orange Public Library & History Center. The Library will notify you when your holds are ready for pick up.

When you arrive at the Library, please pull your vehicle up to the designated Holds Pickup area. If walking or biking to the Library, there will be a Walk-Up Holds Pickup area as well. Call (714) 288-2401 and inform staff you are here to pick up your items. Provide your library card number or California Driver’s License/ID number as well as a description of your vehicle (car model/color) or your attire. A staff member will bring out your items and place them in the pickup area. Grab your items when instructed to do so.

4. I do not have an Orange Public Library card. Can I still apply for one, and checkout material using your Curbside Service?

Curbside Service is only available for current Orange Public Library members. If you do not have a card with us, you will not be able to checkout library material at this time. However, can register online and instantly get an eCard that will grant you access to our online resources including eAudiobooks, eBooks, eMagazines, etc.

5. I would like to use your Curbside Service, but my card is expired, and I am unable to place holds online.

Please call the Library at (714) 288-2401, and we will assist you with renewing your library card privileges.

6. How do I place an item on hold?

Items can be placed on hold by visiting our library catalog, downloading the Orange Public Library App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or calling (714) 288-2401.

7. If I place an item on hold, how will I know when it is available? 

When items become available, you will be notified either through email or by phone. You can also check your Library account throughout the day. If you are using the Library App, items ready to be picked up with say "Item is Being Held". If you are checking your account through the website, items ready to be picked up will say "Item Available". 

8. Is there a limit on how many items I can place on hold or checkout?

You are allowed to place up to 15 items on hold at one time. You are able to checkout all 15 items as long as you do not exceed the checkout limit on your account.  

9. What if I want more than 15 items?

Once your first 15 hold items are checked out, you can place more holds by visiting the Library’s website, our library catalog, downloading the Orange Public Library App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or you can call (714) 288-2401 to place more holds with a Librarian.

10. What if I have a hold available at the El Modena or Taft Branch Library?

If you have items that are currently being held at another branch, you may elect to have them transferred over to the Orange Public Library & History Center for Holds Pickup. Although our branches are closed to the public, there are staff available to take your calls. Call (714)288-2401 for assistance.

11. I have holds available, but I do not want to pick them up at this time. Will I be charged a fee?

You will not be charged for the items that are not picked up. If you would like to cancel your holds, you can do so by calling (714) 288-2401, visiting the library catalog and logging into your account, or through the Orange Public Library App. You can download our App from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Install the App and login with your Library card number and PIN.

12. Can I return items to staff during Curbside Service?

Curbside Service is for pick up only; however once you exit Curbside you will be able to park and return your materials by placing them in the wall return slots located near the 5-minute parking zone and Children’s Courtyard. We encourage you to return your book and audiovisual materials as soon as you are finished with them. Your action will increase the selection of materials for everyone and will allow you to borrow additional materials. The library is adding new materials every day so we encourage you to bring back your previously checked out items and come get some new audiobooks or CDs for the entire family!

13. How do I return special collection items like a Ukulele Kit or Mental Health Kit?

Visit the Curbside Service during operating hours, follow directions to park in the Holds Pickup lane, and then call (714) 288-2401. A staff member will bring a cart outside. Please stay in your vehicle until staff motions that you can exit your vehicle and then place your item on the cart.

If you are walking or biking to the Library, please stand in the Walk-Up Holds Pickup line, call (714) 288-2401, and stay in line until a staff member motions for you to place your item on their cart.

14. When are my items due back? Will loan periods remain the same?  

Items will be due back when our libraries reopen.

15. Is it safe to pick up my holds? What precautions is the Library taking? 

The Library has measures in place to provide for the safety of both our patrons and our staff. Returned materials are quarantined for 4 days prior to processing.  

16. I have fees. Will I be able to pay them during Curbside Service or over the phone?

Unfortunately, you will not be able to pay fees over the phone or when picking up items. However, you can pay them by downloading the Orange Public Library App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and logging into your Library card account. 17. What if I have questions about my library account during my visit?

If you have a question about your account, you can contact us at (714) 288-2401. Please have your library card number or California Driver’s License/ID number available at the time of your call.

18. What if I have other questions?

If you have a question about our collection, would like to place a hold on an item, or have other questions, please call us at (714) 288-2401 during Curbside hours.

19. Where should I drop off my donated books, DVDs, and CDs?

The Friends of the Library may be able to accept large donations by appointment only. Please call the Library at (714) 288-2401 during Curbside hours for more information. If you have a small amount of material to donate, we ask that you hold onto it until the Library reopens.

20. When I arrive at the Library, where should I go to pickup my items?

For safety, only one-way traffic will be permitted through the parking lot. See map to the right

If you are driving, please enter the parking lot from Chapman Avenue using the west driveway, which is near the Orange Public Library & History Center monument sign and is the closest to Grand Street and the Plaza.

If you are walking, please enter through the History Walk that is near the west driveway and Orange Public Library & History Center monument sign, and immediately adjacent to the building.
