The Reserve Officer program currently employs 24 officers, with a goal of expanding to 50. We feel ours is one of the top programs in the County and State. We provide a wide range of opportunities for our Reserve Police Officers.
After completing a POST approved academy and an extensive on-the-job training program with a Field Training Officer, a Level I Reserve Officer performs law enforcement and crime prevention duties; enforces city and state laws; patrols Orange in a marked police vehicle alone or with another officer. The Reserve essentially performs the same duties as their full time regular counterparts.
Level 2 and 3 Reserve Officer assignments include assisting officers in our Detention Facility as a Booking Officer. Duties include searching prisoners; preparing reports; as well as fingerprinting, photographing and monitoring prisoners. Normally, two Reserve Officers will team up to transport prisoners to the Orange County Jail.
There are many special event details throughout the year that are available to the Reserves. Many Level 2 and 3 Reserve Officers work as a "partner" to regular officers on patrol or on foot at the Block.
The salary range for Level 1 Reserves is $14.31 to $15.82 per hour. Level 2's and 3's earn $11.76 to $12.96 per hour.
All Reserves are provided with necessary equipment to perform their duties as Police Officers. Reserves work closely with all members of the Department. Many of our "regular" Police Officers began their careers as members of the Reserve Officer Unit. So, whether your goal is to become a full-time officer or to serve the community as a Reserve, the Reserve Program is a good way to begin.
All Reserve Officers are required to work a minimum of 16 hours per month. This includes a monthly meeting of about 3 hours.
