The City of Orange Police Department Communications Bureau is dedicated to working with the community and we work closely with the residents of Orange to identify problems and reduce crime. We rely on citizens to be that important first link to reducing crime, by calling the Police Department and alerting us to unusual behavior. In addition to our emergency 9-1-1 number, we also have a seven-day, twenty-four-hour number that is answered by Police Communications Personnel. This number is (714) 744-7444. The next link is the Police Dispatcher. It is the responsibility of the dispatcher to accurately and as quickly as possible, identify the nature of your call and assist you in resolving the problem.
Because each incoming call may vary from a request for general information to a report of a life threatening incident, the dispatcher must ask specific questions (or control the conversation) to accurately prioritize the call and assign it to a Police Officer. The more quickly we can gather pertinent details--what did you see, what do they look like, what type of car do they have; etc.--the more quickly the third link falls into place: the Police Officer in the field.
Our Communications Bureau consists of the following classifications.
Police Dispatcher I
This is the entry level Police Dispatcher, assigned primarily to answering incoming Emergency 9-1-1, and non-emergency telephone calls.
Police Dispatcher II
This position includes the Dispatcher I duties, but also requires the added responsibilities of working the police radio system. This includes sending the officers on calls for service, as well as being responsible to tracking all officer activities. Staffing level for this position is fourteen.
Dispatch Shift Supervisor
The supervisor oversees the daily operations of the Communications Bureau. The supervisor ensures that all calls for police assistance are answered in a timely fashion, and that officers respond to appropriate requests for assistance. Our Communications Unit is proud of our quality of service and accomplishments.
