Selection of Canine Handlers

The position of canine handler is a unique assignment in any police agency. The handler is completely responsible for the care and upkeep of his/her canine partner. This includes feeding, bathing and brushing. On top of that, the handler and canine must attend weekly and monthly trainings, in addition to their workweek. Seldom are a handler and his/her K9 partner separated. Because of this, the selection of a handler is not an easy task. The handler must be dedicated and willing to make personal sacrifices. He/she must be available to respond to work 24-hours a day.
