The Crimes Property Unit is charged with the investigation of crimes involving property, such as burglary, auto theft, vandalism, identity theft, grand and petty thefts, and economic crimes. These crimes have a tremendous impact on businesses and the public.
The Crimes Property Detectives are assigned to investigate cases based on their training and expertise. One detective is assigned to each of the following specialties: Auto theft, residential burglary, commercial burglary, and petty theft/vandalism. Our Economic Crimes Section consists of four detectives and a civilian investigator. Three detectives are assigned frauds/identity theft cases, one Detective investigates major frauds and embezzlements, and the civilian investigator's primary responsibility is bad checks.
The detectives in the Crimes Property Unit are continually provided with specialized training throughout the year in order to learn more about how to combat the types of crime they investigate.
The growing use of the World Wide Web has led to a significant increase in high-tech crimes such as identity theft, forgery, illegal use of access accounts, and other electronic transmissions. These types of crime keep the economic crimes detectives extremely busy. The Orange Police Department strongly encourages everyone to keep their personal information confidential, and to shred anything that might contain personal information. You can make yourself less vulnerable to identity theft by managing your personal information wisely, for additional tips; contact the California Department of Consumer Affairs at www.privacyprotection.ca.gov
