| Y.A.N.A. (You Are Not Alone) Citizens are greeted with a visit from a Police Department Volunteer. YANA--”You Are Not Alone” is designed to provide a measure of security and well being for elderly people who are primarily living alone, or where one member of the family is bedridden, and the mate is required to maintain the home. Thus, the Volunteers may identify any needs for special services and make referrals to other agencies. Also, those participating in the YANA program are often “shut-ins.” Their only contact with people may be through the Volunteers; the personal visits by Volunteers can enhance the quality of their lives.

THE CAREGIVER’S COMMANDMENTS DON’T dwell on the past; live in the present, one day at a time. Be realistic in your expectations. Join a support group, and be an active participant; benefit from others with similar experiences. Learn everything you can about stroke. Ask questions. Knowledge is empowering. Seek outside help when you need it. NEVER allow yourself to become isolated; invite family and friends into your home. Keep your children and/or families informed and involve them in the healing process. DO something personal for yourself every day; get out of the house at least once a week. Take time out for your own personal health (i.e., nutrition, exercise, appearance, relaxation). NEVER be afraid of anger, frustration, or guilt. These are expected responses to catastrophic illnesses. Accept them as normal and learn how to manage them constructively. Work for quality of life within your new parameters. Live each day to the fullest!
