Personnel & Training Unit

The Personnel/Training Unit is responsible for critical functions within the Police Department. Its function is to ensure that all personnel receive the proper training and certification for each position, assignment, or rank within the Department. These assignments range from Police Officer to Dispatcher to Records Clerk to Cadet, and all other support positions. The Training staff works closely with outside agencies and academies in the development of training programs for basic recruits and experienced officers. This training is established in order to meet requirements and guidelines set forth by the California Commission on Police Officers Standards and Training and also includes advanced officer training programs.

The Background Unit, within Personnel and Training, assists in the administration of the selection process for both sworn and non-sworn personnel. It is comprised of three full-time and three part-time background investigators. The selection process for police officers consists of administering a written examination, conducting a physical agility test for the candidates who pass the written examination, and scheduling an oral interview for those who successfully pass the physical agility test. Once an applicant has completed the testing process, potential officers are subjected to a thorough background investigation, which also includes a polygraph examination, medical assessment, and a series of psychological tests.

Once hired, the recruit is supervised by the Personnel and Training Sergeant throughout his/her academy and field training. The Personnel and Training Unit is also responsible for the certification and continuing education of existing personnel, developing lesson plans/curriculum for training courses and maintaining specialized certifications. State law requires annual training for police officers, dispatchers, and other police personnel.  Approximately 4,000 hours of training occur each year.
