Library Card Policies

Lost Library Cards

You are responsible for all items checked out on your library card. Please phone the Lending Services department at either the Taft (288-2430) or the El Modena Branch Library (288-2450) or Orange Public Library & History Center (288-2401) immediately to report lost or stolen library cards. There is a replacement fee of $1.00 for a child's library card and $3.00 for an adult card.

Placing Holds (Reserves)

While in the online catalog, you may place a hold on library material that you wish to check out. When the item becomes available you will be notified by e-mail (if you have provided us with your address) or U.S. Mail. Once available, the item will be held for 1 week at the Orange Public Library (OPL) facility that you received your library card from. If you would like to pick the item up at another OPL facility, please call Lending Services at either the Taft (288-2430), El Modena Branch Library (288-2450), or Orange Public Library & History Center (288-2401) when you receive your notice. You may also ask Lending Services staff to permanently change your registration branch so that holds will automatically be held at your preferred OPL facility in the future.

A total of 10 holds may be placed on your library account.

There is a $0.50 charge for any holds not picked-up.

You may not use your library card to place holds if one of the following conditions exists:

  • Your library card has been reported as lost or stolen.
  • Your library card has expired.
  • Your library card privileges have been blocked due to excessive fines or overdue items.
  • The 10 hold limit has been reached.

Holds cannot be placed on materials in the following collections:

  • Children's board books
  • Local History
  • Paperbacks
  • Reference
  • Study guides

Renewing Library Materials

You can now renew library materials using the "about my account" feature in the online catalog. Most library materials can be renewed one time unless they are on hold for another patron. Magazines, encyclopedias, and CD-ROMs are not renewable.

You will not be able to renew material on your library card account if:

  • The material has already been renewed.
  • Your library card has been reported as lost or stolen.
  • Your library card has expired.
  • Your library card privileges have been blocked due to fines or overdue items.

Returning Library Materials

You may return books and magazines in the bookdrops outside the libraries 24 hours a day. DVDs, and compact discs should be returned inside the library when the library is open. There is a night drop for these items located at the front of each library which can be used when the library is closed.
