El Camino Real Park

Built in the 1970s, El Camino Real Park encompasses nearly 19 acres at the intersection of Main St. and Orangewood Ave. The park is one of the most popular in the city for youth and adult sport leagues. In 2001, the Orange City Council directed staff to prepare a Master Plan for the park to evaluate the user demands and issues. The staff and a design consultant worked with the surrounding neighbors and community groups to develop a consensus plan. After a series of public meetings, the Park Planning and Development Commission reviewed the Final Consensus Plan and authorized the city staff to begin the environmental review process in 2002. The environmental review found that some aspects of the proposed plan could have potential light and noise impacts upon the surrounding neighborhood. Several changes were made to the site plan to avoid or mitigate these impacts. The Park Planning and Development Commission will review the design changes in August. Next, the city staff will complete and circulate the environmental documentation for public review.

Hart Park Pool Renovations

Hart Park Pool (“The Plunge”) was constructed in 1937 and is currently the only pool facility owned by the city of Orange. In the spring of 2005, work will begin on interior renovations to the pool building. The improvements will be completed by the summer swim season. In the fall of 2006, the pool, deck and the exterior will be renovated. Please contact Pamela Galera or call (714) 744-5597 if you have any questions about these improvement projects.

Grijalva Park at Santiago Creek and Gymnasium/Sports Center

In the summer of 2004, the city of Orange completed the master plan for the 27.6-acre property immediately adjacent to Grijalva Park and the design and floor plan for the gymnasium/sports center. The Master Plan identifies locations for a future gymnasium, aquatic center, community center, skate park, outdoor amphitheatre, links to regional trails, an open meadow with picnic facilities, natural creek, landscape, and parking. The design embodies the valuable natural features and embraces the rich history of the site. Based on input from the community, the Park Planning and Development Commission, and the City Council, the consultant designed a 24,500-square-foot gymnasium/sports center that features two basketball courts, multi-purpose rooms for recreational classes, storage and meeting rooms. Currently, the city is preparing the construction documents for the gymnasium. The Community Foundation of Orange is raising funds to support the construction of the gymnasium.
