Councilmember Mike Alvarez

The Honorable Mike Alvarez was elected by the community to serve two terms on the Orange City Council in 1996 and overwhelmingly re-elected in 2000 until 2004. Two full council terms are allowed under the city’s term limits law. He served on the Audit Committee to oversee the City’s financial investment policy throughout his two terms. His Council colleagues voted Mike Alvarez to serve as Mayor Pro Tem in 2001-2002.

Prior to his election, Mike served on the Planning Commission for the City of Orange, the sixth largest city in Orange County. His community service includes President, Friends of the Orange Public Library, 1992-1996, President, Orange Downtown Business Owners Association, 1993-1996, the Board of Directors, Orange Chamber of Commerce, and Chairman of the Government Legislative Committee, 1993-1996.

Mike Alvarez’s leadership has earned recognition and honors from civic organizations, including the Orange Police and Firefighters, Chamber of Commerce, Library, and the County of Orange. Mike served on the California League of Cities, 1996-2004, on the Governing Board, Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA), 2000-2004, the Board of Directors, Orange County Sanitation District,1996-2001, and the Orange County Vector Control District, 1997-2001. He represented the City of Orange on the Orange County Growth Management Board. Mike was selected in 2005 as Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America. 

He is a Founding Member of The Great Park of Orange County Foundation, where he currently serves on a Community Advisory oversight board of the development of the 4,000-acre former El Toro MCAS. He previously served as an Associate Member of the El Toro Re-use Planning Authority.

Mike Alvarez is a Partner in Alvarez Limited Partners, privately held real estate investment and management companies. Mike serves on the Board of Directors of the family-held Army-Navy Store located in downtown Orange, where it was founded in 1955.

Mike Alvarez earned his B.A. from the University of California, Riverside. He held a Teaching Credential in Secondary Education from the University of California at Irvine, and is a licensed real estate broker.

Mike Alvarez is married to his wife April and they have daughters Emily and Abigail.
